Every year 17
th of May is observed as World Hypertension Day (WHD). World Hypertension League (WHL) launched the WHD in 2005 with an aim of spreading awareness about hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure.
Hypertension is a critical disease and can be fatal if not treated in time. The problem, though, is not the unavailability of medicines and treatment, it is the ignorance of people around the world about the ailment and it’s widespread. To raise awareness about hypertension, WHL has adopted the theme ‘Know your numbers’ and launched an initiative called ‘May Measurement Month’.
The blood pressure levels of an individual are his numbers. Normal blood pressure is 120 over 80 mm of mercury (mmHg) and hypertension is higher than 130 over 80 mmHg. World Hypertension Day (WHD) on May 17, 2018 has a goal of having 10 Million blood pressures taken globally in the one month leading up to WHD.
