The National Doctors' Day is observed on the 1st of July in India and aims to celebrate the dedication and contributions of medical professionals. Different countries celebrate their doctors on different dates.
This day recognises the vital role doctors play in our lives and allows us to express gratitude for their commitment to improving the community’s health. Doctors dedicate their lives to addressing, diagnosing, treating, and preventing health concerns. When an individual suffers from even the smallest of medical problems, their first point of contact is often the doctor.
However, did you know that National Doctor’s Day is celebrated in the country due to the hard work and dedication of one specific doctor? Let’s learn more about it.
Why We Celebrate National Doctor’s Day
In 1991, the Indian Government officially designated July 1st as National Doctor's Day to honour the remarkable contributions of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (July 1, 1882 - July 1, 1962).
He was a distinguished physician, West Bengal's second chief minister, and a visionary leader who shaped India's healthcare system significantly. The following points explain his views and his commitment to the health of the nation briefly -
Vision for national freedom through health
Dr. Roy firmly believed that the dream of 'Swaraj' or independence from the colonial powers would remain unattainable if the population lacked health and strength. Hence, he encouraged Indians to attain a healthy mind and body.
Help in establishing important medical institutions
Dr. Roy played a pivotal role in establishing esteemed medical institutions like the Indian Medical Association and the Medical Council of India, while also serving as the latter's President from 1939 to 1945.
Support for women’s health
Dr. Roy encouraged women from all backgrounds to seek medical care at the medical centres established by him and his team. His advocacy for women's health led to the creation of hospitals like Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for Women and Children and the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Additionally, his medical training centres also helped women learn about nursing and social work and also encouraged them to spread the knowledge forward.
It is due to the above reasons and more, that today, India celebrates National Doctor’s Day on the 1st of every July.
Additionally, we observe Doctor’s Day not just to pay homage to Dr. Roy but also to acknowledge and express gratitude to every individual in the field of medicine.

How to Celebrate National Doctor’s Day?
You can express gratitude to a doctor in various heartfelt forms:
Gift red carnations
Red carnations are ideal not only because they are the official symbol of National Doctor’s Day, but also because they make a vibrant gift for your favourite physician. If red carnations aren't available, any red flowers of your choice can be a thoughtful alternative.
Send greeting cards
While a little traditional in thought, greeting cards carry a timeless charm. Pen down a personalised message, express gratitude, and note down the advice and help that the doctor provided.
Record a personalised video message
Whether recorded or via video call, express your thanks, acknowledging the doctor's role in improving your health and enhancing your life.
Ensuring your financial well-being is as crucial as seeking care from a skilled doctor. A
comprehensive health insurance policy is instrumental in achieving this goal.
Importance of Health Insurance
Health insurance plays a pivotal role in safeguarding individuals and families from the financial burden of medical expenses, aligning with the spirit of Doctor's Day. Here's how health insurance holds importance:
1. Financial protection*
Health insurance provides a crucial financial safety net, shielding individuals from the exorbitant costs associated with medical treatments, surgeries, and hospital stays. This protection ensures individuals can focus on their recovery without worrying about the economic strain.
2. Access to quality healthcare*
With
health insurance coverage, individuals gain access to a network of healthcare providers, enabling them to receive timely and quality medical care. This accessibility is vital for addressing health concerns promptly and effectively.
3. Preventive care*
A
general insurance plan, like a health insurance policy, offers coverage for preventive services, encouraging policyholders to prioritise
regular health check-ups and screenings. This emphasis on preventive care can lead to early detection of health issues, contributing to better overall well-being.
4. Peace of mind
Having general insurance plans, such as health insurance or motor insurance, and knowing that one is financially protected against unforeseen emergencies brings better peace of mind.
Claims are subject to terms and conditions set forth under health insurance policy.
On National Doctor's Day, recognizing the value of health insurance is not just a tribute to the medical profession but a practical step towards ensuring holistic well-being for everyone.
When buying a health insurance plan, remember to use a
health insurance calculator . It gives you an estimate of a plan’s premium so that you can create a budget accordingly.
*Standard T&C apply.
