Ideally, you should get yourself acquainted with the
motor insurance claim process when you purchase your car or bike insurance. You can do so by going through your policy document or consulting your insurance provider or your insurance agent.
However, even if you haven’t had a chance to do so yet, you can do it now. By doing so, you ensure that you are prepared for the possibility of an accident involving your vehicle. Remember that your comprehensive motor insurance policy may also include a
personal accident cover (if you have opted for the same), so you may have more than one reason to claim your comprehensive vehicle insurance policy.
Policy Exclusions
Before you initiate a
motor insurance claim, ensure that you are well aware of what your policy covers. Take a look at the policy document to understand the inclusions and exclusions of your policy. Some of the common scenarios that may not be covered by your policy are as follows:*
Routine wear and tear, or depreciation
Electrical or mechanical breakdown
Driving without a valid driving licence
Voluntary excess
If person is driving under the influence (of alcohol or drugs)
Damage to personal property

Any exclusions included in the policy wording
Motor Insurance Claims Process
If you are facing a situation with your vehicle that is covered by your insurance policy, you will be required to follow due process to make your claim. Here are the steps you can follow when you want to make a motor insurance policy claim:
Register your claim
You can choose one of the ways offered by your insurance provider and initiate your claims process. It could be via email, app, call, or the website. When doing so, ensure that you have your policy details, accident details, engine and chassis number, and vehicle inspection address ready.
Vehicle Repairs
Once your claim is initiated, you can move your affected vehicle from the site of the accident to the garage. Ensure that this is done as safely as possible to avoid further damage. Get the vehicle towed, if necessary.
In the event of theft, the police should issue a Non-Traceable Report in case the vehicle is not to be found within 90 days of the incident. The report can then be submitted to the insurance provider.
Survey and Claim Settlement
Based on the type of claim made, the vehicle will be subject to a survey. After this, the claim settlement process would follow.*
