Tamil Nadu RTO: Duties and Services

The Tamil Nadu RTO performs various duties as per the mandate of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Some of these duties and services include:
  1. Issuing and renewing the registration certificate of vehicles
  2. Issuing licences such as learner’s licence (LL), driver’s licence (DL), and international driver’s licence (IDL)
  3. Renewing licences nearing their expiry date
  4. Conducting fitness checks on vehicles
  5. Issuing and renewing fitness certificates to vehicles, based on the checks conducted
  6. Issuing local/national permits to vehicles used for commercial purposes
  7. Collecting road tax from vehicles registered with the RTO
  8. Issuing no-objection certificate for vehicles relocating to another state
  9. Acting against vehicle owners found to be violating traffic rules
  10. Imposing fines for traffic violations
  11. Imposing punishment on repeat offenders by confiscating their vehicle, suspending their licence/vehicle registration, or sentencing them with imprisonment
  12. Organising drives and campaigns to increase awareness of road safety, and the rules and regulations of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988
As a responsible vehicle owner in the state of Tamil Nadu, you are expected to abide by the guidelines laid down by the Tamil Nadu RTO. Here is how you can contribute towards a safe road environment for your fellow citizens:
  1. Always drive your vehicle with valid documents such as driver’s licence, insurance for the vehicle, PUC, and RC
  2. If any of your documents have lapsed, make sure you renew them on time to avoid getting penalised
  3. Do not overspeed or engage in rash driving, as this endangers both you and you those around you
  4. Do not try to bribe authorities at checkpoints, as this could lead to severe action against you
  5. Avoid making illegal modifications to your vehicle, since it will mean getting penalised or a more severe penalty, such as suspension of licence or vehicle registration
