Tatkaal Passport: Eligibility, Procedure, and Fees

Acquiring a passport can be a lengthy process. While that is understandable, in the case of urgent travel plans, getting a passport within a short time can be difficult. This is why the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India has created the Tatkal passport mechanism. A Tatkal passport is designed for those with urgent travel needs since it ensures quick issuance so that one can adjust to sudden, unforeseen plans. It's especially useful when it comes to business or academic requirements, as it is a quick alternative to the usual time-consuming process. Let’s look at the process of acquiring a Tatkal passport, documentation, charges, and more.

What is a Tatkaal Passport?

A Tatkaal Passport is a special application scheme designed to speed up the passport issuance process in India. It provides a faster alternative for those needing a passport urgently, allowing them to bypass the typically lengthy procedure. In cases where an unexpected international trip arises, not having a passport can be problematic. The thought of navigating the complex and time-consuming passport application process can add to the stress. Thankfully, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has introduced the Tatkaal Passport system to ensure quicker passport processing for those in urgent need.

The Tatkal scheme is available to applicants who meet specific eligibility criteria. Below are the key requirements:

  2. Post-Issuance Verification: Applicants under the Tatkal scheme may undergo post-issuance verification to ensure the authenticity of the documents submitted.
  3. No Misuse: The Tatkal scheme is designed for genuine urgent needs and should not be used to bypass the regular application process without a valid reason.
  4. Indian Citizenship: Only Indian citizens are eligible to apply for a Tatkal passport.
  5. Complete Documentation: Applicants must submit all required documents, including proof of identity, address, and date of birth.
  6. Clean Police Record: A clean police record is essential, with no criminal activity or illegal behavior. Previous police verification should show no adverse reports.
  7. No Pending Legal Restrictions: Applicants must not have any ongoing legal cases or restrictions that would hinder their travel abroad.

  9. Government Employees: Government employees must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their department to be eligible for the Tatkal scheme.
  10. Additional Fee: Applicants must be prepared to pay the additional Tatkal fee for expedited processing.
