Pre and Post Hospitalisation covered

What are Pre and Post-Hospitalization Expenses?

Pre‐hospitalization expenses refer to costs that you (insured) incur prior to admission in a healthcare facility or hospital. On the other hand, post‐hospitalization expenses constitute medical expenditure after discharge.

Leading health insurance providers, besides offering coverage for medical expenses during an emergency, also provide adequate coverage for both pre and post‐hospitalization expenses.

Pre‐hospitalization expenses

Hospitalization doesn’t happen suddenly, unless one sustains injuries in an accident. There is an interim period where symptoms start to surface, thereby necessitating consultation with the doctor for proper diagnosis. It is only after a series of tests that the exact medical condition is established.

Pre‐hospitalization expenses constitute a range of medical tests that are usually prescribed by doctors prior to admission in a hospital. Generally, medical costs that you incur 30 days prior to admission, are included in the ambit of pre‐hospitalization expenses. However, the exact period of time will vary across insurance providers.

One thing to keep in mind here is that pre‐hospitalization expenses will apply only for conditions for which one would be hospitalized.

This type of expenses usually include the following:

✓  Costs incurred towards medical tests

✓  Scans, X‐rays, etc.

✓  Consultation fees charged by doctors and healthcare professionals

Post‐hospitalization expenses

Medical care usually doesn’t stop with discharge from the hospital. There is generally a period of convalescence that follows. It is during this time that one should rest in order to properly recuperate from an illness or injury.

Post‐hospitalization expenses comprise of medicines and drugs, therapies aimed at recovery and consultation fees charged by physicians. While these are typically covered for a period of 60 days following discharge, the exact time will vary across insurers.
